The Wyandotte Business Improvement Association runs along Wyandotte St. E. from the east side of McDougall to the west side of Gladstone and one block north and south of Wyandotte. Wyandotte is one of Windsor’s main thoroughfares and stretches east and west through the city. The name is of Native Canadian origin and designates a former tribe that was prominent along the Detroit River. Many of the present day streets are named after French settlers such as Louis, Marentette, Langlois, Pierre, and Parent. Since this historical period, the association’s ethnic composition experienced numerous changes, eventually transforming into the cultural mosaic being celebrated today.
Since its foundation, the BIA has changed its name three times, but is currently known as the Wyandotte Town Centre, “Where Windsor Welcomes the World”. This slogan best depicts the style and intent of the BIA since its inception, being an area where a number of ethnic groups choose to conduct their business alongside Canadian businesses.
A large percentage of the current business and property owners are of Arabic decent, which complements a variety of other countries represented such as the Philippines, Greece, Jamaica, the Caribbean, the Orient, Cambodia, Germany, Africa, Italy, other European countries, and English and French Canada. Indeed, the Wyandotte Town Centre enjoys a tremendous mix of nationalities and cultures.
The BIA is home to many different businesses such as quality food markets, restaurants, gift shops, beauty salons, bakeries, furniture stores, clothing stores, and professional business services. Residents and visitors can enjoy the exquisite flavours of its Chinese, Arabic, Greek, Caribbean, and Canadian cuisine, along with several others. The gift shops, clothing stores, and food markets feature products from Arabic countries as well as locally grown produce, meat, and seafood. Our bakeries whip up an array of quality treats and pastries designed to meet everyone’s party needs and satisfy even the most stubborn sweet tooth!
Over the years the Wyandotte Town Centre board of directors has endeavoured to provide a business environment that is conducive to attracting a wide variety of customers and tourists. Through aesthetic improvements the area is taking on a new life, which can only lead to success for the companies that call Wyandotte Town Centre home!
